In 2063, World War 3 ended. While the Global Alliance had beaten the Asian Entente, it had come at great cost in both military and civilian casualties. Most of the world's navies lay at the bottom of the ocean, and battlefields across the Middle East, Europe and Southern Asia were littered with tanks, trucks and bomb craters from almost 19 years of war.
In the years that followed, world leaders met in London, Paris, Hong Kong, Canberra and Los Angeles for meetings to discuss and plan to rebuild infrastructure and the world in general. Initially these efforts remained very much focused on Earth, but following a number of unusual transmissions picked up by NASA and the ESA, it was decided there would be some prudence in creating a Space Force as part of the now United Earth Defence Forces. While the UEDF were primarily tasked with dealing with terrorism, piracy and rebuilding aerospace infrastructure around the world, the Space Force branch would begin rebuilding satellite networks and secretly began work on a planetary defence system.
By 2081, the Starfighter Corps was created as a sub-command of the UESDF, and the rank system was instituted. There were three routes into the organisation. The Enlisted route had very little requirement for any educational background, and trained personnel on the job in apprentice-style scenarios. The Warrant Officer route was for people with specialist qualifications in certain fields, who either were not up to or simply didn't want the responsibilities of leadership. The Commissioned Officers were specialists who could lead, for example the pilots who would fly the UESDF starfighters as part of squadrons stationed all over planet Earth.
